U2 drop huge Glastonbury hint day before ticket day

October 2nd, 2010

The official U2 website u2.com have dropped the biggest hint yet that the Irish rockers will play Glastonbury next year.

Tickets for Glastonbury 2011 go on sale this weekend. Will U2 fans finally see ‘Glastonbury’ at Glasto?

Glastonbury’s Michael Eavis has said he’d like U2 to play in 2011 after they missed their slot at Worthy Farm this past June.

Looking at the tour dates – there is a gap in the band’s schedule  ahead of the  East Lansing show on June 26th which would make the Friday night a possibility.

The most Paul McGuinness would say was, ‘We’re certainly excited about our plans for next year. Watch this space!’

There has been speculation for months that U2 will pay a visit to Worthy Farm in 2011 after they pulled out of a headline slot this year after frontman Bono injured his back, forcing them to cancel Glastonbury and some of their North American tour dates.

More fuel was added to the rumour mill when earlier this year Michael Eavis revealed that he’d asked U2 to play but was still awaiting a reply.

The fact that the official U2 website has made the above post the day before Glastonbury tickets go on sale strongly suggests they will indeed play in 2011.

In the original text published, they also suggested there was a so far unannounced gig in Baltimore planned, and that a Friday night Glastonbury appearance “could fit between 22nd June Baltimore and 26th East Lansing”. This part of the text has since been removed.

Bono liked Muse & The Edge’s Glastonbury tribute says Matt Bellamy

September 10th, 2010

Matt Bellamy of Muse has revealed to BBC 6Music News that Bono “liked” their version of “Where the Streets Have No Name” that they performed with The Edge on the Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

Bellamy said he heard from The Edge that Bono thought it “a fitting tribute to the band”.

U2, who pulled out of headlining Glastonbury this year due Bono’s back injury are widely tipped to play in 2011 after Michael Eavis previously stated that he’d asked U2 to perform next year but was still awaiting a reply.

Fatboy Slim self confirms for Glastonbury 2011

July 9th, 2010

Superstar DJ Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim has stated on his website that he will be playing Glastonbury next year.

When asked by website visitor Vic about his secret sets at Glastonbury, Cook replied

Hello vic, sorry I didn’t get this until I got back from glasto. I didn’t get there until Friday coz I flew straight from the world cup in south africa. I hope you caught me in the dance tent on Friday night coz my ‘guerilla’ gig didn’t happen on Saturday. It was supposed to be a sound system by the bandstand but the security got wind (as did too many people) and they closed us down because of crowd safety. it’s a shame, next year I’ll go back up to shangri la and play one of the more recognised systems like arcadia. I hope you enjoyed the sunshine.
What a classic glasto that was!

U2 cancel Glastonbury performance

May 25th, 2010

It has been reported on the official Glastonbury Festival website that U2 have had to pull out of their forthcoming Glastonbury performance due to Bono’s recent back injury.

Bono phoned Michael Eavis personally this morning to give him the news.

“I’m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special – we even wrote a song especially for the Festival.”, said Bono.

Micael Eavis said, “It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed. Clearly, they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them. At this point, we have no comment to make about possible replacements for U2′s Friday night slot. Instead, we would simply like to send Bono our very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.”

Speculation as to who will replace U2 as the Friday night Pyramid Stage headliner is already raging, with Coldplay, Dizzee Rascal and Led Zepplin the current favourites.

Probably no Glastonbury ticket resale says Emily Eavis

May 9th, 2010

There will probably be no further Glastonbury Festival ticket resales this year according to Emily Eavis.

When asked on Twitter about ticket resales, Emily replied “I’m afraid there probably wont be a resale now – if there is we will let you know via our website”.

UPDATE: Emily has since tweeted “To everyone asking about a resale, we will let you know by the end of the week if and when there will be one.”

Front of Pyramid Stage to be flag free says Emily Eavis

May 8th, 2010

Emily Eavis has confirmed on Twitter that the front of the Pyramid Stage will be kept flag free this year.

This follows numerous complaints over the last few years that the main stages are being obscured by the volume of flags at the front  In a poll earlier this year on the official Glastonbury Festival website, festival goers voted by a slight majority not to ban flags outright, but the shear number of people who voted to ban them showed that this is an issue for many people.

We don’t know how this wll be enforced, ot the extend of the no flag zone yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as more information is available.

Emily was asked if there are any plans to reduce the number of flags in front of the barrier (Pyramid Stage).

@emilyeavis Is there any more info on plans to reduce the flag problems? ie a ban of flags in front of the first barrier?

Muse want Bono to join them on stage

February 25th, 2010

Matt Bellamy has said he wants U2′s Bono to join them onstage when they headline the Pyramid Stage on Saturday 26th June.

At last night’s NME awards, Bellamy told NME Radio that he was thinking about asking Bono to join them on stage if he’ll be sticking around after U2′s Friday night headiine slot.

Ballamy said “It should be great, We’re hoping to do something a bit unusual there. A little collaboration with someone, maybe get Bono to come and sing a song. I’m not sure if he’ll be hanging around for that but I’ll ask him anyway.”

Arctic Monkeys say ‘no’ to Glastonbury’s 40th anniversary

February 25th, 2010

Indie band Arctic Monkeys have declared they will not perform at Glastonbury until after they have completed their next album.

Bassist Nick O’Malley told BBC 6 Music, “We wouldn’t want to blow it, We’d rather come back after we’d done an album and do it properly.”

The band are planning to start their fourth album soon, and said they hope to work with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme again.

The band won best live act at last night’s NME Awards.
