Radiohead and Fun Lovin Criminals to play Glastonbury?

February 6th, 2011

Fun Lovin Criminals frontman and BBC 6Music DJ Huey Morgan has revealed that he will be playing Glastonbury this year, and also speculated whether Radiohead will be there too.

He said,

“We had Phil Selway,on the show a couple of weeks back, and he was saying he might see me at Glastonbury because I’m gonna be playing, and if he’s going to be there he might be playing. I don’t know, because he’s got a family and what not, he might not want to bring his whole family there, so they might be playing, who knows?”.

This was said immediately after playing Radiohead – Just, suggesting that “they” referred to Radiohead, though Selway could have originally meant that he’ll be there with one of his other projects, or even just to see some bands. As Huey said, who knows?

Huey Morgan didn’t clarify whether he’ll be playing with the Fun Lovin Criminals or doing a DJ set. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more information.

You can listen and judge for yourself using the BBC iPlayer (skip to 8 mins). This recording is only available to UK IP addresses until 4:02PM Sun, 13th Feb.

For a list of acts who have already confirmed that they’ll be playing Glastonbury this year, see our line-up page. U2, Prince and Coldplay to headline Glastonbury 2011?

October 22nd, 2010

According to The Sun newspaper, the Glastonbury 2011 Pyramid Stage headliners will be U2, Prince and possibly Coldplay.

The Sun were the first to confirm U2 as headliners this year before they had to pull out due to Bono’s back injury. So will it be two years in a row that the often maligned newspaper has trumped everyone else to the first Glastonbury headline confirmation?

All three acts have been heavily rumoured to play for months, so it will be no surprise to many Glastonbury fans if they do play.

This is what The Sun has to say.

GLASTONBURY 2011 is lining up to be a real royal affair.

PRINCE and rock kings U2 have signed up to top the bill.

COLDPLAY are likely to fill the third headline slot too, with the final details being thrashed out. The festival isn’t for another eight months but founder MICHAEL EAVIS has clearly been grafting hard masterminding the best music event in years.

As soon as we find out more, we’ll report it here.

U2 drop huge Glastonbury hint day before ticket day

October 2nd, 2010

The official U2 website u2.com have dropped the biggest hint yet that the Irish rockers will play Glastonbury next year.

Tickets for Glastonbury 2011 go on sale this weekend. Will U2 fans finally see ‘Glastonbury’ at Glasto?

Glastonbury’s Michael Eavis has said he’d like U2 to play in 2011 after they missed their slot at Worthy Farm this past June.

Looking at the tour dates – there is a gap in the band’s schedule  ahead of the  East Lansing show on June 26th which would make the Friday night a possibility.

The most Paul McGuinness would say was, ‘We’re certainly excited about our plans for next year. Watch this space!’

There has been speculation for months that U2 will pay a visit to Worthy Farm in 2011 after they pulled out of a headline slot this year after frontman Bono injured his back, forcing them to cancel Glastonbury and some of their North American tour dates.

More fuel was added to the rumour mill when earlier this year Michael Eavis revealed that he’d asked U2 to play but was still awaiting a reply.

The fact that the official U2 website has made the above post the day before Glastonbury tickets go on sale strongly suggests they will indeed play in 2011.

In the original text published, they also suggested there was a so far unannounced gig in Baltimore planned, and that a Friday night Glastonbury appearance “could fit between 22nd June Baltimore and 26th East Lansing”. This part of the text has since been removed.

Fatboy Slim self confirms for Glastonbury 2011

July 9th, 2010

Superstar DJ Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim has stated on his website that he will be playing Glastonbury next year.

When asked by website visitor Vic about his secret sets at Glastonbury, Cook replied

Hello vic, sorry I didn’t get this until I got back from glasto. I didn’t get there until Friday coz I flew straight from the world cup in south africa. I hope you caught me in the dance tent on Friday night coz my ‘guerilla’ gig didn’t happen on Saturday. It was supposed to be a sound system by the bandstand but the security got wind (as did too many people) and they closed us down because of crowd safety. it’s a shame, next year I’ll go back up to shangri la and play one of the more recognised systems like arcadia. I hope you enjoyed the sunshine.
What a classic glasto that was!

Gorillaz to replace U2 as Friday Pyramid Stage headliners

May 26th, 2010

Gorillaz have been announced as replacements for U2 as Friday night Pyramid Stage headliners.

Speculation has been raging since it was announced that U2 had to pull out of Glastonbury due to Bono suffering a serious back injury. Amoung the previously rumoured acts were Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney and Coldplay.

Michael Eavis said “This is going to be Gorilllaz’ only UK festival appearance, and it’ll be a massive audio visual spectacle which will really ignite the Pyramid on the Friday night, with Muse, then Stevie Wonder to follow.

“I’m very excited about Gorillaz’ show coming here because they’re so open to guests and collaborations. The alchemy of Friday’s show is going to be astonishing: a perfect, contemporary way to kick off the 40th anniversary celebrations.

“I am so grateful for the enthusiasm of the media and the whole of the music industry for their willingness and eagerness to support us in what could have been a crisis.”

Murdoc from Gorillaz commented, “We’re like some great big horrible warship pulling in to the Bay of Glastonbury to save the day. It was us or The Beatles and they split up years ago. The previous soldiers got pulled from duty last minute so it’s up to my Plastic Beach naval cavalry to sail in and sort the battlefield out. I can assure you though, I’m bringing extra troops. Loads of them. Glastonbury will be ours…cutlasses drawn, trumpets ready. We’re coming in…”

U2 cancel Glastonbury performance

May 25th, 2010

It has been reported on the official Glastonbury Festival website that U2 have had to pull out of their forthcoming Glastonbury performance due to Bono’s recent back injury.

Bono phoned Michael Eavis personally this morning to give him the news.

“I’m heartbroken. We really wanted to be there to do something really special – we even wrote a song especially for the Festival.”, said Bono.

Micael Eavis said, “It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed. Clearly, they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them. At this point, we have no comment to make about possible replacements for U2′s Friday night slot. Instead, we would simply like to send Bono our very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.”

Speculation as to who will replace U2 as the Friday night Pyramid Stage headliner is already raging, with Coldplay, Dizzee Rascal and Led Zepplin the current favourites.

Rolf Harris to play the Pyramid Stage

May 11th, 2010

Veteran Australian performer Rolf Harris will open Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage on Friday 26th June. The Two Little Boys star who turns 80 this year caused massive crowd control problems for the festival organisers when he played the Jazz World Stage in 2009 and will no doubt draw another huge crowd this year.

The Pyramid Stage opening acts for Saturday and Sunday have also been named, they are Tinchy Stryder and the Yeovil Town Band.
