Glastonbury considering a ban on flags says Melvin Benn

August 25th, 2009

Glastonbury co-organiser Melvin Benn has revealed that he’s been talking to Michael Eavis about introducing a ban on flags in front of stages.

The proliferation of flags has increased rapidly over the last few years to the point where it is often impossible to see acts performing on stage.

This has lead to many fans complaining about the view, particularly during Bruce Springsteen’s Saturday night Pyramid Stage headline performance this year.

“You couldn’t see the acts, the flags were everywhere.”

Keyboardist Andy Fletcher cleared up internet claims that the band will be playing during an interview with Kerrang! Radio’s Emma Scott. “That is a rumour and it’s not true.” Says Fletcher. “Unless our management is going behind our backs, as far as we’re concerned that is definitely not on.”

Fletcher also said that Depeche Mode will be touring “until February” 2010 – despite the band previously saing that their ‘World Tour of the Universe 2009′ would only run until September.

Scott asked if their schedule had been expanded, to which Andy Fletcher replied: “I’ve given it away, you’re going to get me in trouble now. My manager’s going to come down on me heavy!”

“It’s likely that we will be doing quite a few more dates – maybe Birmingham. It would be nice to put our feet up after September but the fans are just going crazy, we might have to extend it. There could be riots!”

Wind to recharge festival phones

June 16th, 2008

Festival-goers are used to braving rain and mud, but this year’s Glastonbury crowds may be grateful for breezy conditions to power a giant mobile phone charger.

Orange has announced that it plans to install the seven-metre high renewable energy recharge “pod” at the Somerset music event.

Featuring a wind generator and solar panels to harness the weather, the unit will enable people at Glastonbury to keep their phones working during the three-day event.

The free service follows trials of small, individual portable wind chargers which were tested at last year’s festival. According to Orange, the pod will also be secure because each phone will be stored in a locker while it is recharging, with the owner keeping hold of the key.

The pod, developed with renewable energy experts Gotwind, can charge up to 100 mobile phones per hour, Orange said. The energy it generates is equivalent to powering a DJ booth for Groove Armada for a marathon 88 hour set.

June 8th, 2008

While her new movie I Am Because We Are received a warm welcome in Cannes, Madonna has uncharacteristically shied away from promoting the film in Britain. The 90-minute film about Malawian children was to be screened at the Glastonbury Festival this month, but the singer has pulled out. Madonna hoped the film could be shown on the Saturday and there was talk of a question and answer session,’ says a source. ‘But alleged poor ticket sales for the festival put her off. After talks with organisers, it was decided the festival was not the right venue to showcase her film.’
